Fall Equinox

Finding Balance in the Garden: Welcoming the Fall Equinox

The fall equinox quietly arrived this week, a moment of perfect balance - when day and night share the sky in equal measure. It’s a pause in the turning of the seasons, a reminder that even the earth has its moments of stillness before change unfolds.

In the garden, this shift is subtle but powerful. The light softens, shadows stretch a little longer, and plants begin their slow descent into rest.

For us, the equinox offers more than a seasonal milestone. It’s an invitation. An invitation to slow down, to reflect, and to notice the harmony between growth and rest. Just as our gardens thrive on cycles of planting, blossoming, and dormancy, our well-being flourishes when we honor those same rhythms in our own lives.

This season encourages us to gather what we’ve grown - whether that’s in our vegetable beds or in our personal journeys - and take stock of what has nourished us. It also asks us to gently let go of what no longer serves, much like the trees release their leaves to make way for renewal.

As you step into autumn, consider small rituals of balance:

Spend a few moments outside at dusk, when day gives way to night, to notice the shifting light.

Plant something new for the cooler season, my personal favorite. Greens, bulbs, or even cover crops. This will carry life forward into spring.

Bring seasonal beauty indoors with cut stems of ornamental grasses or branches. My personal favorites for cutting from my own garden: Japanese Anemone, Persimmon and Apple branches.

The equinox reminds us that balance is not a fixed state but a practice. Something we return to again and again, in our gardens and in our lives.

Here’s to autumn’s arrival, to balance, and to finding nourishment in both the light and the dark.

xx,
Danielle
